Slateport City was lucky enough to have a governing body that had invested substantial resources into the Parks & Recreation department, especially in terms of the city's largest greenspace within the upper district. The park was a sprawling gem where even the most jaded urbanite could stretch their legs and unwind in nature.[break][break]

And for people like Dr. GIDEON GRAVES, whose museum of natural history was right down the road, the park was the perfect place to take new interns interested in entomology.[break][break]

"Today we'll be focusing our collection on lepidopterans, though you're welcome to capture any Pokémon you'd like for your own uses." The professor informed, addressing the small group of interns that had accompanied him.[break][break]

"Now, who can tell me what types of insects are a part of order Lepidoptera?"

An intern prepared to speak up, but they were cut off.

"You and your butterflies, Dr. Graves." A voice rang out, though it was one was not one set to return to work for another week. "You'll scare your own interns with such big words."

Unfortunately for Howard Slayte, Gideon's museum didn't cover blowing up Dewford or getting blown up in a desert as a proper medical expense. Truly, the struggle of a working class archaeologist and museum employee was an eternally damning one. It was a Sisyphean march, and Howard suspected that he'd never get the boulder up the hill that was PTO.

He brushed a strand of hair behind his ear as he regarded the interns.

"If you ever want to be as experienced as our director, we'll need to foster a friendly competition. There's a contest in Johto where people catch bugs in a park not unlike this one." Howard waggled his finger thoughtfully and the group, his eye flicking to Gideon. "What say you, Dr. Graves?"

His eye sparkled at the chance to speak with the director.

"Howard?" Dr. Graves called out over the small crowd, his eyebrows inclined upward at the tiniest degree — showing quite a bit of shock for someone usually so unexpressive.[break][break]

There was an uncharacteristic warmth to his voice, too, as he quickly instructed the interns on what to do next before approaching howard slayte.[break][break]

"Mr. Slayte has the right idea. How about... winner gets to choose their shifts this month? That should rile up some competition."[break][break]

Once the interns had scurried off, GIDEON GRAVES turned his full attention to his long-lost worker.[break][break]

"I wasn't expecting to see you so soon. What a pleasant surprise," The professor couldn't help but briefly scan Howard's body, unconsciously checking to see if he was indeed alright and actually safe to be outside of a hospital setting.[break][break]

"How are you feeling?"[break][break]

Meanwhile, CRISPR, his VIVILLON, fluttered over to where a SPINARAK hung from a thin thread. Showering it in SLEEP POWDER, the lepidopteran then worked to lug it back over to its owner. CRISPR apparently thought they were in the competition, too.

The two set off through the park, their bugs behind them. Crispr is a dainty thing, fluttering through the branches as Sleep Powder fell from its wings in a dust comparable to snow. Celpho lumbered along, his claws snapping with ferocity not displayed by his owner.

"Shitty." Howard admitted as they walked through dappled paths of sun and shade. "But I'm better. Thanks for the time off, I appreciate it. That, and for not firing me."

He kept his left arm covered in his sleeve and stuffed in his pocket to avoid displaying the scarring, feeling Gideon look him over. It was a hideous sight, and it made the archaeologist nervous. Not only did it invite gazes, but it was a lasting memory of destroying a city. It was best to leave that figment of the past buried.

For now.

"More interns? You have half of the anthropologists in the field working in the museum, Dr. Graves. You'll deprive the rest of Hoenn of young talent at this rate." He threw a Pokeball at a passing bird with remarkable dexterity. It was a shot made easier by Crispr's Sleep Powder.

"Your gift basket was very kind. It was the highlight of my stay in the hospital."

As if he would fire howard slayte. Who would pester him about the meteors in the basement then? Or joke about how hideous his socks were? The man was irreplaceable. [break][break]

At the mention of his large group of interns, GIDEON GRAVES chuckled dryly and replied, "Better our institution than others. I'll admit I'm greedy in that regard."[break][break]

As they strolled down dappled paths, a MUNCHLAX leisurely broke from the brush, pausing in the middle of the trail to smack its lips and yawn widely. On cue, CRISPR fluttered over with another round of SLEEP POWDER to finish the job.[break][break]

"You're included in that, of course." The professor assured, glancing over to where Howard walked at his side. "Let me know how I can help smooth your transition back into work. We'll accommodate whatever you need."[break][break]

The other man's thanks was a pleasant surprise. The basket had been such a small thing, after all.[break][break]

"I'm glad to hear that." Gideon said through a small, innocuous smile.

"That won't be necessary. I'm fine with the freedom you've given me."

Truthfully, it felt wrong to be given so many luxuries after coveting this position for so long. If he indulged in them, it would feel wrong. After struggling to get a job in the field for so long, he was allowed time to recover? It felt wrong. He should've been fired for resting.

Indulging in Gideon's openhandedness was a betrayal to everything that the admin thought he deserved as an archaeologist. That was to say, nothing.

Even a job was a luxury. Asking for anything beyond that was a dream that reached into delusion.

"You're remarkably greedy, but everyone is entitled to a smidge of selfishness. You, more than most. Me, less than most." Greed was a human necessity for ambition, but Howard had none. There was no future that he dared reach for, no world he dare create.

Not yet.

"Running into that desert to chase ghosts was a mistake. I was too greedy for my own good." He confessed as Celpho's quick eye snipped a flower from a grove, sending a minute fairy careening through the air. A Pokeball flew. "But I don't regret it."

GIDEON GRAVES inwardly teetered on the edge of professionalism. Seeing Howard as he was now, recovering from some grievous injury, plucked at his heart strings. He cared about the man, wanted the best for him.[break][break]

But to comment on his self-deprecation might be crossing a line. Still... the things howard slayte was saying concerned the professor, enough that he felt compelled to toe into his employee's personal life.[break][break]

"Howard," Gideon began, his tone a touch softer than its usual blunt monotone. "Forgive me if this is too intrusive, but..."[break][break]

"What exactly were you doing in the desert? Communication about the circumstances surrounding your hospitalization was... vague, at best."

The question made the admin's lip twitch. Not in discontent, but in amusement. Funny, how his work at the museum and his personal goal were beginning to coalesce. Team Rocket wanted him to seize giants for them. He wanted giants to defeat Eternatus. Gideon simply wanted knowledge.

Why couldn't Gideon Graves have found him sooner? The worlds he could've seen. The knowledge he could've acquired. The lives spared would've been incalculable.

All of that had disappeared because of an answering machine.

"Big Pokémon were spotted, and they were all ancient. Did you really think I'd refrain from digging around in the sands? Me?" Think of what we could've uncovered!" His eye was wide, alert. It stared at a Volbeat as it flew by, before being snatched up by Celpho.

A bug of his own.

"What we did uncover. Gideon, I found a piece of Hoenn's history in the sand." His eye sparkled with a mixture of joy and exhilaration. "Registeel."

It was what he'd feared. By now, the news had been plastered with coverage concerning REGISTEEL and its rampage in the desert. Many had been injured, like Howard, but just as many more had lost their lives.[break][break]

"Yes, I would expect you to refrain." Gideon admonished, though he kept his tone level, if a little preachy. [break][break]

"Still, Registeel of all things..." There was awe in the professor's voice now, but it quickly faded as he shook his head of the thought. [break][break]

What if howard slayte had captured REGISTEEL?[break][break]

"It's too dangerous, Howard. Our duty as academics is not to be caught in the fray. Let the professional trainers deal with the danger and then delve in once it's safe to."[break][break]

GIDEON GRAVES was being a hypocrite, of course. He'd ventured to the Ancient Tomb, to the Border, to the Ultra Crater, and many other dangerous places in pursuit of knowledge. But, for all of those expeditions, he'd traveled with capable trainers much stronger than himself.[break][break]

"Discovery is important, I won't begrudge you that." Gideon's voice softened again, his fondness for the other man evident in the way the professor expressed his concern. [break][break]

"But not at the cost of your life."

There's a moment where the mask almost slipped off. Speaking to Gideon is, for better or for worse, an easy thing to do. The man is kind, knowledgeable, and wise. It's easy to forget that this is the man that had ruined one facet of his life with a mere answering machine.

"It actually-" He almost says that catching Regice had been easy. His tongue is loose, and it threatens to wag and spill everything that blurs the line between Howard Slayte and Admin Fox. "-wasn't too bad."

He carries on, talking to Gideon as a Clefable meanders across the path. It's not a bug, but Celpho incapacitates it with a carefully measured Cut, and Howard threw a Pokeball at it. The Armaldo impresses Howard more and more, due to his forbearance and capability for measuring out attacks.

"There were a lot of dangerous attacks, Max Moves and the like, but Gideon, listen to me." His eye sparkled with excitement. "There were ruins in the desert, once the Registeel fled. I think it was wounded by something, but what?"

There were practically stars floating around the archaeologist's head.

"Aren't you a little curious about our region's history, separate from Draconids and Hoyeons and whatnot?"
